Retro-Commissioning Certification Requirements for a Firm

  • Have operated for a minimum period of 12 months continuously with full-time employees as an engineering firm; BSC firm; mechanical contractor; plumbing contractor; fire protection contractor; electrical contractor; testing contractor; or an adjusting and balancing (TAB) contractor
  • Enjoy a reputation for integrity and responsible performance. Six letters of endorsement from building owners or contract awarding authorities in the firm’s area are required
  • Have a NEBB Certified RCx Professional on staff.
  • Be affiliated and in good standing with a local NEBB Chapter.
  • Possess the various instruments and equipment which are required; the local NEBB Chapter must visually confirm compliance.
  • Confirm in writing that it will conform to the NEBB guidelines for the calibration and maintenance of the instruments and equipment required.
  • Possess the current NEBB Procedural Standards for Retro-Commissioning of Existing Buildings.
  • Designate in writing one or more certified professionals who will represent the firm and be responsible for the supervision of retro-commissioning work.

Retro-Commissioning Certified Professional Requirements

  • Be employed by a Certified Firm or candidate firm.
  • Hold a management position in the firm, be able to represent the firm on all building retro commissioning matters, and have a reputation of integrity with building owners, consultants and awarding authorities.
  • Have experience equal to either of the following:
    • Hold a Bachelor of Science Engineering degree from an accredited college or university with at least two (2) years of supervisory experience in building systems design, building systems installation, Building Systems Commissioning, Building Systems Testing, or TAB, or
    • Hold an Associate’s Degree in Engineering Technology from and accredited institution with at least four (4) years of experience in performing; Building Systems Design, or Building Systems installation or BSC, or Systems Testing, or TAB
    • Have a minimum of four (4) years of experience in performing; Building Systems Design, or Building Systems installation or BSC, or Systems Testing, or TAB and have (4) years of supervisory experience in; Building Systems Design, or Building Systems installation or BSC, or Systems Testing, or TAB. Eight years total, or
    • Have a minimum of four (4) years of Building Systems design or installation related experience (which could include accredited apprenticeship), and have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in performing; Building Systems Design, or Building Systems installation or Building Systems Commissioning, or Systems Testing, or TAB and have in addition, a minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience in; Building Systems Design, or Building Systems installation or BSC, or Systems Testing, or TAB. Ten years total.
  • Applicants must be a designated candidate certified professional of a NEBB – certified or candidate firm in good standing with a local chapter.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Building Systems Retro Commissioning by passing the NEBB RCx Procedural Standard Examination
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Technical Building Systems Retro Commissioning by passing the NEBB Retro Commissioning Examination

* Attendance at the NEBB RCx Seminar is NOT a requirement. Any candidate can apply to take the Retro-Commissioning exams. However, it is strongly recommended that the candidate attend the seminar prior to taking the exams due to the training and review nature of this seminar.
